Newcastle Newspapers

'The Newcastle Herald's aim is to produce a "one-stop' newspaper. We believe we cover major national and international events as well as any metropolitan paper, while our philosophy is to view those events through the eyes of firstly, Hunter Valley people, and secondly, regional and rural Australians. We believe we have the right mix - and our circulation and readership figures reflect that success.'

From humble beginnings more than 140 years ago, The Newcastle Herald and its parent company Newcastle Newspapers have grown to become one of the great regional Australian success stories.

Owned since 1977 by John Fairfax Holdings, publishers of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Newcastle Newspaper employs more than 300 people and pumps more than $20 million a year into the Hunter economy.

The Herald's historic offices were recently rebuilt and the presses shifted to a state-of-the-art facility at Beresfield, near the F3 west of Newcastle, at a total cost of more that $27.5 million.

The Herald is published six days a week, while the Hunter's free weekly paper, The Post, comes out on Wednesdays. The Herald went from broadsheet to tabloid in July 1998, and its circulation has sky rocketed by almost 20% in the first 3 years, making it Australia's fastest growing regional daily.

Both papers are an integral part of the Hunter community. The Herald's reporting and commentary leads public debate in the region, and its coverage of local issues, from business and politics through to sport and entertainment, is second to none.

Newcastle Newspapers sponsors and supports a broad range of community interests and sporting events, and its school newspaper program gives school children practical experience in the media.

Advertising is a crucial part of the newspaper world, and The Herald and The Post classifieds are the region's instant guide to the real estate, motor and jobs market. Both papers boast full-colour pages, giving display advertisers a winning edge.
