Penfolds

In a winemaking tradition spanning over 150 years, Penfolds has set the highest standards for Australian wines, with a portfolio that enjoys international acclaim. Today, Penfolds wines such as Grange, St Henri Shiraz and Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon are amongst Australia’s greatest achievements.

In its illustrious history, Penfolds has earned countless accolades, and an ongoing commitment to uncompromising quality has ensured continued success. Recently, Penfolds Grange once again graced the prestigious ‘Top 100’ list of the US magazine ‘Wine Spectator’, having already been named in their Millennium edition as one of the Top 100 wines of the 20th century. Penfolds was also named ‘International Red Winemaker of the Year’ for the second time at the 2000 International Wine Challenge in London, the world’s most important wine competition.

Penfolds is, of course, renowned for its red wines. Its ultra-premium collection comprises the top three listings in Huon Hooke’s ‘Top 20 Australian reds of all-time’. The white wines also continue to go from strength to strength, headed up by the highly esteemed Yattarna Chardonnay. This wine, along with the Penfolds Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling, Reserve Bin 00A Chardonnay and Koonunga Hill Chardonnay recently combined to win Penfolds white winemaker Oliver Crawford the Wine Society’s title of Young Australian Winemaker 2002.

The premium range perfectly embodies Penfolds’ philosophy of “the right style, the right grapes, the right oak, the right bottling time and a little patience”. Equally, Penfolds Koonunga Hill and Penfolds Rawson’s Retreat have this hallmark of quality and consistently over-deliver on value, with Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet named Great Value Red Wine of the Year at the 2001 International Wine Challenge in London.

At the heart of Penfolds’ success are its superb South Australian vineyards, many of them old and low-yielding, including Magill Estate, Kalimna, Koonunga Hill and Clare Estate. Penfolds’ winegrowing resources include Barossa Valle, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra and Padthaway.
