NSW Open Championship

Tournament Information

One of Australian golf's oldest and most prestigious tournaments, the New South Wales Open Championship, was re-launched on 7-10 November 2002 at NSW premier resort course, and one of Australia's best modern championship golf courses, Horizons Golf Resort located in picturesque Port Stephens.

The NSW Open Championship is an official PGA Tour of Australasia event and Horizons Golf Resort has committed to hosting and promoting the event for 2002, 2003, and 2004 with an option for a further three (3) years.

The 2002 event was held in honour of Jack Newton to recognise his achievements and contributions to Australian golf.  A mentor to many and a real contributor to the development of golf both on and off the course.  Jack also played a key role in working with Horizons Golf Resort to reinstate the NSW Open Championship on the PGA Tour Australasia.

Among the field of 156 of Australia's finest golfing talent were Andre Stolz, Wayne Grady, Terry Price, Wayne Riley, Nathan Green, Paul Davenport, Kenny Druce, Michael Harwood and many others.  At stake was the coveted NSW Open Championship title, a winner's cheque of $36,000 and total prizemoney of $200,000.

After a thrilling final round Queenslander Terry Price won the NSW Open Championship.  Price shot a final round of 70 to finish the tournament nine under the card.  The lead changed constantly over the final 18 holes as players contended with hot conditions and variable winds.  Price collected the $36,000 for the win, ahead of a group of five locked together on eight under, including tour veteran Wayne Grady, rookie pro Adam Groom, Andre Stolz, Mahal Pearce and part-time professional Jason Norris.

The 2003 NSW Open was held on 20-23 November 2003 at the Macquarie Links Golf Club.  Craig Carmichael from ACT took out the NSW Open with an outstanding -15, one shot clear of fellow Federal Golf Club member Andrew McKenzie.   For more information visit www.nswga.com.au.
