Media releases Byrnes to Compete in Women's British Open Thursday, 3 July 2003 Horizons Golf Resort’s Touring Professional, Cherie Byrnes has received an exemption into the 1.05 million pound Weetabix Women’s British Open to be played at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club, Lancashire, England from 31 July – 3 August 2003. Byrnes qualified for an exemption as she is ranked within the top 35 players on the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit. Other players to make up the total field of 144 include the top 15 from last year’s championship who receive an exemption, the top 70 on the LPGA Order of Merit, the top five of the Japanese Order of Merit, past winners of the event over the previous five years along with the champions of the other four world majors over the past five years. The remaining spots in the field will be decided by two qualifying stages where other women golfers wanting to play in the event will play off for the spots. Byrnes said “I have played the past two Weetabix British Opens which were held at Sunningdale Golf Club in England and Turnberry Golf Club in Scotland. I learnt a lot from both of these events and I am really looking forward to taking on the best ladies in the world”.
