Trainees Tee up at Horizons

Tuesday, 29 July 2003

The future of professional golf tee up at Horizons Golf Resort when the 2003 Mazda NSW PGA Trainee Championship is played at the par 72 championship course from August 4 to 8.

The event will be played as a four-day tournament from 5 to 8 August with a Pro Am being played on 4 August. 132 trainees will be competing for a prize purse of $40,000 as well as the opportunity to be named NSW Trainee champion.

Horizons Director of Golf, Jason Atkins said “After a successful NSW PGA Trainee Championship in 2002, we are again looking forward to the future of professional golf playing on our championship course. I anticipate that there will be some low scores shot throughout the tournament which will make for an exciting week of golf.”

On the back of last year’s successful tournament, NSW PGA Trainee Coordinator Stephen Denning said “Our Association with Horizons Golf Resort is now in its second year and after an immensely successful tournament last year we are hoping to raise the bar and make this the premier trainee event in Australia.”

Defending champion Danny Vera is confirmed to play in the 2003 Championship. Vera, who won in 2002 by nine shots, will be a favourite to take out the 2003 NSW PGA Championship. Other favourites in the 132 strong field will be local golfers, Kurt Linde (Belmont), Mark Gilson (Charlestown) and Horizons Trainee Professional Luke Maga will be hoping to capatilise on his home course advantage.
