Byrnes Makes Confident Start to Weetabix Women's British Open

Friday, 1 August 2003

Horizons Golf Resort’s Touring Professional, Cherie Byrnes has hit one under par 71 and sitting in tied 23rd position in round one of the 1.05 million pound Weetabix Women’s British Open being played at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club, Lancashire from Thursday, 31 July – Sunday, 3 August 2003.

Amongst a field of the best players in the world, Byrnes teed off in a light breeze with a round consisting of 10 pars, 5 birdies, 2 bogies and a double bogie.

Byrnes said “I’m feeling really good and was pleased with the way I hit the ball. I hit all fairways in regulation which certainly helps as this is one of those courses that you really struggle if you start missing fairways and greens”.

Defending Champion, Karrie Webb is sitting in tied first position with American Wendy Ward with a five under par 67. Current world number one, Annika Sorenstam (Sweden) is keen to win the only major title, which has so far eluded her and is sitting in 3rd position with four under par 68.

Other leading Australians to watch are Shani Waugh sitting in tied 4th position with three under par 69 and Rachel Teske with two under par 70.

Byrnes will tee off in round two at 6.56am and be looking to continue her confident start to the Weetabix Women’s British Open.
