Day One 2003 Mazda NSW Trainee Championship at Horizons

The field of 128 NSW and interstate trainee professionals found the going tough on day one of the $40,000 2003 Mazda NSW Trainee Championship being played at Horizons Golf Resort today.

Only eight players managed to break par on the slick greens with Scott Fisher (NSW) and Jeremy Westaway (VIC) the two club house leaders after round one on a score of 4 under par 68. A further shot back on 69 is David Partridge (NSW) with four others Matthew Yates (NSW), Greg McConnell (VIC), Steven Myers (NSW) and local Belmont Trainee Kurt Linde (NSW) all two shots a drift of the leaders on 2 under par 70.

Defending Champion Danny Vera had a 2 over par 74 today to be six shots off the lead. Vera is trying to become the only trainee ever to win three consecutive NSW Trainee Championships.

The 2003 Mazda NSW Trainee Championship will be contested over 72 holes, with the cut being made tomorrow.

Horizons Director of Golf, Jason Atkins said “The course is proving a challenge to players as it has been set for true championship standards. With the cut being made tomorrow, we will see players going out in top form to make the final cut. We wish all players another successful day on our par 72 championship course.”

Horizons trainee, Luke Maga is currently sitting in tied 69th position with a score of 80 for round one and will be looking to take on the competition on his home course tomorrow.
