Media releases Byrnes Shares Lead in Second LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament Thursday, 18 September 2003 Horizons Golf Resort’s Touring Professional, Cherie Byrnes fired a confident 2 under par 70 to be leading in the first round of the second and final sectional qualifier for the 2004 LPGA Tour being played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. In hot conditions, Byrnes hit 4 birdies with the best being on the tough 12th hole where she nearly holed her approach shot, 2 bogies and 12 pars. Byrnes said “I am very pleased with the lead up that I have had to this event. I spent a lot of time around the short game area at The Bear’s Club in Florida and I also have a new approach when in this area now which has helped”. Byrnes added “The Palmer Course is tree-lined and has a fair few hazards and placement from the tee is quite critical. I played this course two years ago and I felt really confident and this resulted in me hitting 12 out of the 14 fairways which made things a little easier”. In round two Byrnes will tee off at 7.50am on the Dinah Shore Course (home of the Kraft Nabisco Championship) where the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties. The two final rounds will be played back on the Palmer Course and will see the top 30 players from each sectional qualifier advance to the final qualifying tournament to be held on 21-24 October at the LPGA International, Legends Course, Daytona Beach, Florida.
