2002 NSW Open Championship Receives Award of Distinction at NSW Tourism Awards

Thursday, 6 November 2003

Horizons Golf Resort received an award of distinction at Monday night’s gala 2003 NSW Tourism Awards for Business Excellence for the NSW Open Championship in the Significant Festivals and Events category.

The NSW Open was relaunched at Horizons on 7-10 November 2002 and was one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious golf titles and the trophy bears the names of some of Australia’s greatest professionals. The 2002 NSW Open was held in honour of Jack Newton to recognise his achievements and contributions to Australian golf and it was fitting that the Hunter was the home to the relaunch of the Championship. Over 15,000 spectators flowed through the gates and experienced professional golf at it’s very best.

General Manager, Simon Brown said “It is events such as the NSW Open and the ALPG Players’ Championship which assisted greatly with Horizons being awarded host of the 2004 ANZ Championship which is to be held from 12-15 February 2004. Horizons and in fact the region have become a serious player in holding major golfing events in Australia and we are proud to deliver to the Newcastle region Australia’s second largest men’s professional golf event”.

Brown added “I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating our fellow regional tourism partners who took out State awards and extend every good fortune for the national awards judging. We will continue to work collectively to deliver an exciting tourism destination in order to increase visitation to the region”.
