Horizons Named Home of the 2003-2004 Hunter Academy of Sport Golf Talent Squad

Horizons Golf Resort today became the official practice home of the 2003-2004 Hunter Academy of Sport Golf Talent Squad at an official ceremony where the talented squad was announced.

The Hunter Academy of Sport is the largest regional academy in Australia with some 600 talented young sports people from the region now participating in twenty six talent development programmes similar in concept to the Australian Institute of Sport programmes, but conducted at regional level. The sports involved are track and field (athletics), baseball, basketball, canoe slalom, cricket, cycling, disabled, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rowing, rugby league, rugby union, sailing, soccer, softball, surf lifesaving, tae kwon do, tennis, touch and triathlon.

The Academy’s golf talent development squad has been running since 1997 and has produced some outstanding golfers including Nick Flanagan, Rudi Bezuidenhout, Polly Travica and Nikki Garrett.

The 2003-2004 academy golf squad includes 27 talented teenagers of which eight are girls and run under the guidance of head coach David Johnston, Programme Managers Don Nelson and Susan Wilson and other top coaches including Jason Atkins, Darren Green and Leigh Newman.

General Manager, Simon Brown said “Horizons Golf Resort is very proud to be announced the practice home of the Hunter Academy of Sport Golf Talent Development Squad as we place high priority in supporting the development of junior golf in the Newcastle and Hunter region”.

Brown added “Today we have invited the Squad to join our Touring Professional Cherie Byrnes and Director of Golf Jason Atkins to test their skills on our Championship Course with a round of 9 holes of golf. It is also fitting these future champions in the making will have the opportunity of playing on the home of the 2004 ANZ Championship”.

Executive Director of the Hunter Academy of Sport, Ken Clifford said “This is a great step forward for the Hunter Academy of Golf Program”.
