Media releases Trainees Tee up at Horizons Monday, 26 July 2004 The future of professional golf tee up at Horizons Golf Resort when the 2004 Mazda NSW PGA Trainee Championship is played at the par 72 championship course from 3 to 6 August 2004. The 2004 event boasts a strong field with approximately 30 interstate trainees, adding to the 100 plus field of NSW trainees, all trying for a cut of the $30,000 prize pool and the opportunity to be named NSW Trainee Champion. The event will be played as a four-day tournament from 3 to 6 August with a Pro Am being played on 2 August. Horizons General Manager, Mike Orloff said “After a successful NSW PGA Trainee Championship in 2003, we are again looking forward to the future of professional golf playing on our championship course”. On the back of last year’s successful tournament, NSW PGA Event Coordinator David Barker said “Our association with Horizons Golf Resort is now in it’s third year and we expect these championships to prove a great test of golf on the tough Horizons layout and if the wind blows it could really separate the field. The state championships are an integral part of the trainee program, giving trainees a taste of four round tournaments and the prize money associated. The championships combine the competitive tournament nature with a social mix, allowing players to network with trainees from around the country”. Last year’s NSW Trainee Champion, Martin Joyce from Victoria will be returning to Horizons to defend his title. Last year Joyce cruised to victory with a total of four under par 284, seven shots clear of his nearest competitor. Other favourites in the 130 plus field will be local golfers, Kurt Linde (Belmont), Mark Gilson (Oaks) and Greg Green (Bexley). Horizons Trainee Professional Richard Went will be hoping to capitalise on his home course advantage.
